JGH surgeon to head Canadian Orthopaedic Association

Dr. John Antoniou, a staff physician in the JGH Department of Orthopedics, has been elected President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Association.

Widely recognized as a leader in orthopedic surgery and research, Dr. Antoniou is a tenured Professor of Surgery at McGill University and a National Researcher in the Health division of the Quebec Research Fund.

Dr. Antoniou specializes in adult joint reconstruction and alternative treatments for patients suffering from osteoarthritis. His research focuses on the clinical and basic investigation of aging and the degeneration of the musculoskeletal system.

Dr. Antoniou is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, a Fellow Member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, and a member of the Hip Society.

He has also served as the President of the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society, and he chairs the International Committee  of the Orthopaedic Research Society.

In 2004, Dr. Antoniou was instrumental in making the JGH the first North American hospital to perform articular surface replacement (ASR) surgery, an alternative for patients who might previously have been candidates for a conventional form of total hip replacement.

ASR potentially allows the patient to return to previous activity levels, while providing a natural range of motion. More of the hip bone is preserved, enabling the patient to retain more natural hip biomechanics and balance.
