From the archives: Be it ever so humble, there’s no place like home for JGH nurses

Working as a JGH nurse in the mid- to late 1930s (the first years of the hospital’s existence) was a challenge for all sorts of reasons. But even relaxing away from the workplace was no great comfort.

In that era, many nurses lived on the JGH property in a residence whose accomodations can best be described as spartan. Nevertheless, complaints were few. It was an era when sacrifices were made by all members of staff to ensure that the newly opened hospital had every chance of surviving into the 1940s and beyond.

The Jewish General Hospital’s 85^th anniversary is an ideal occasion to take a glimpse into the past. By remembering the extraordinary efforts of the hospital’s founders, supporters, staff and volunteers, we honour the enduring legacy of the JGH.
