During surgery at the JGH, Dr. Jason Bayne (left) and Dr. Robert James Doonan—both vascular surgeons—use IVUS technology to determine whether a tear exists in an artery where a stent had previously been placed. To generate images of the patient’s vascular system with heightened clarity, a catheter with an ultrasound probe at its tip is inserted into an artery in the groin and is then guided to the iliac artery in the abdomen. After examining the IVUS images on a high-resolution screen, the surgeons discover a tear that had not been visible in an angiogram (a type of x-ray). As a result, the surgeons decide to implant a new stent near the older one. {Click on the image to enlarge it.)
