Congratulations: Lifetime Achievement Award for Chief of Palliative Care

Dr. Bernard Lapointe, Chief of the JGH Division of Palliative Care and a leading Canadian authority in his field, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Society of Palliative Care Physicians. Dr. Lapointe accepted the award at a conference of the Society in Edmonton in June. The award recognizes individuals who have made a sustained and lasting contribution to palliative medicine and to the Society.

Dr. Lapointe, who joined the JGH in 2000 as its first Chief of Palliative Care, became involved with the care of the dying in 1985, while working in one of Montreal’s busiest AIDS clinics. He is an Associate Professor of Palliative Medicine in McGill University’s Departments of Family Medicine and Oncology, and is Past President of the Palliative Care Association of Quebec and the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association.

In 2009, Dr. Lapointe was named to the Eric M. Flanders Chair in Palliative Medicine in McGill’s Department of Oncology. He received the Award of Recognition from the Quebec Association of Palliative Care in 2016.

 

Major award in internal medicine for thromboembolism investigator

Dr. Susan Kahn, a Senior Investigator in Centre for Clinical Epidemiology in Lady Davis Institute at the JGH, has received the Dr. Davis Sackett Senior Investigator Award from the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine. According to the Society, the award “recognizes excellence in research by a senior general internist and is intended to increase awareness of, and foster interest in, high quality research by general internists in Canada.”

Dr. Kahn, an internationally recognized researcher in venous thromboembolism, founded and directs the Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Care at the JGH. She is also Co-Director of the Canadian Venous Thromboembolism Clinical Trials and Outcomes Research Network.

 

JGH dietitian named Educator of the Year

The Canadian Diabetes Association has presented its 2016 Diabetes Educator of the Year Award to Sondra Sherman, a JGH dietitian in the Division of Endocrinology. Ms. Sherman, who is a Certified Diabetes Educator and a 37-year veteran of the JGH, was officially recognized at a conference of the Association in Ottawa in October, 2016. The Montreal diabetes chapter that Ms. Sherman chairs was also named the Outstanding Chapter of the Year for 2016.

Ms. Sherman serves as Captain of Team Diabetes for the Juvenile Diabetes Marathon, and is a member of Team Diabetes for the Canadian Diabetes Association Marathon.

 

JGH internist is Teacher of the Year

Dr. Errol Stern has been named Teacher of the Year for 2017 in Internal Medicine, in recognition for his training of residents and particularly for his leadership role in operating the JGH Simulation Centre.
