Dr. Susan Kahn honoured for a lifetime of achievement in thrombosis medicine

Dr. Susan Kahn, Director of the Centre of Excellence in Thrombosis and Anticoagulation Care (CETAC) at the JGH, has been named an international honouree for her lifetime of outstanding achievement in thrombosis medicine.

Dr. Kahn will receive her 2026 Esteemed Career Award in Paris this July at the Congress of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). Joining her will be recipients from Ottawa, Brazil, Italy and the United Kingdom.

In a statement from the ISTH, the organization’s President, Dr. Pantep Angchaisuksiri, praised the honourees  for having “made lasting contributions to advance both scientific discovery and clinical care in thrombosis and haemostasis.”

Dr. Vicky Tagalakis, Physician-in-Chief of the JGH, congratulated Dr. Kahn for the “well deserved recognition of your lifelong contributions. Your steadfast leadership and scientific impact have shaped our field, and have meant so much to many of us.”

Dr. Kahn, who founded CETAC, is a Senior Investigator at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research at the JGH and a Professor of Medicine at McGill University.

She has devoted her career to reducing the incidence of venous thromboembolism (VTE), enhancing its diagnosis and therapeutic management, and improving patient safety and outcomes in Canada and globally.

VTE, the formation of blood clots in the veins, is an under-diagnosed and serious, yet preventable, cardiovascular disease that affects people of all ages and ethnicities.

Under Dr. Kahn’s leadership, the JGH has been a trailblazer in developing VTE prevention protocols and anticoagulation guidelines at the national and international level.
