From the archives: Iron lung for polio treatment

An iron lung is used to treat a JGH patient in the 1950s. These devices, which are now obsolete, enabled patients to breathe on their own in a normal manner, when muscle control was lost as a result of diseases such as polio.

The Jewish General Hospital’s 85th anniversary is an ideal occasion to take a glimpse into the past. By remembering the extraordinary efforts of the hospital’s founders, supporters, staff and volunteers, we honour the enduring legacy of the JGH.
