Dr. Mark Wainberg

The McGill Centre for Viral Diseases in the LDI has been renamed in memory of Dr. Mark Wainberg, a pioneering HIV/AIDS researcher.

In 1929, more than 3,000 members of the Jewish community gathered to launch the $1 million campaign to build the JGH.

Testing and research into HIV/AIDS took a major step forward in June 2007 with the inauguration of a $5 million HIV/AIDS Bio-containment Laboratory whose development was spearheaded by research pioneer Dr. Mark Wainberg.

A symposium honouring the late Dr. Mark Wainberg on November 2 will become an annual international event on emerging and complex infectious diseases.

It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the sudden and tragic passing of Dr. Mark A. Wainberg, one of the world’s pre-eminent experts on HIV/AIDS and its treatment.

In the space of just a few months this past spring, Dr. Gerald Batist was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada and a Knight of the National Order of Quebec.

Members of the JGH family mourn the loss on July 14 of Herbert E. Siblin, who served as President of the Board of Directors from 1983 to 1985.

Dr. Mark Wainberg, Director of the HIV/AIDS research section in the Lady Davis Institute at the JGH, has been inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame in recognition for his pioneering work and social activism.

Dr. Roderick McInnes, Director of the Lady Davis Institute at the JGH, has received the 2015 Award for Excellence in Human Genetics Education from the American Society of Human Genetics.

Dr. Mark Wainberg, Director of the HIV/AIDS research section in the Lady Davis Institute, has accepted an invitation to serve on the Board of Scientific Counselors of the National Cancer Institute.
